Anica Langerhol (June 2, 1907, Hurbanova - March 11, 1984, Hurbanova) also spelled Langerholc, was a Lovian Olympic swimmer.
Family[]
Janez Langerhol (1871-1923) was a poor Slovenian farmer who came to Hurbanova looking for better opportunities. He had married a Slovakian girl in 1896 and had a son, Tomas (1897 -1916), but she died around 1900 and he came with his young son to Lovia that year. In Lovia he changed his name to Langerhol, though there are no official records to prove it. He then married a local girl, Elena Ský (1882-1954), in 1904 and they had a daughter, Anica Langerhol.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Anica was born in the family's rented apartment in Hurbanova. Her father worked in the mines and her mother worked in Bara Maruska's foodstand. Tomas was also forced to begin working in the mines by 1914, but was tragically killed in an accident in 1916. Janez was frustrated and wanted to help his family out of poverty. In 1918 he devised a system for canning vegetables, which got the interest of markets who wanted food to last longer, and soon he had made a tidy sum from his venture. To show off his wealth, Janez bought their rented apartment from the owner.
As a result of the family's new wealth, Anica was able to begin enjoying a number of leisure activities. She began swimming in 1920 and appeared to have a natural talent. She was deemed to be so good that she formed part of the tiny Lovian Olympic team that participated in the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. Anica did not win any medals but was still praised in Lovia as their first female Olympian.
Marriage and later life[]
In 1929 she met Albert Arthur Ramsley, whose wife had recently passed away. The two bonded very well, and she took a liking to his young daughter, Esmeralda. They were married in 1931 at RCC Saint Urban. They had 3 children, Daniel Alfonz, Joseph and Clara. Anica did not participate in the 1932 Olympics and instead remained in Oceana. She died in 1984 of old age.
