Language in Lovia

There are a number of languages in Lovia. English is the sole official language and is by far the most widely spoken. It is recognized in the highest law, the Constitution as the "national language". The variety of English spoken by the Lovians is Lovian English, "defined as a variety of American English, sharing its orthography and grammar, and most of its pronunciation and vocabulary, supplemented with lexical and grammatical features that are generally recognized as Lovian and that are understandable to all Lovians." The language of Oceana (Narasha 'Oshenna) is a unique language spoken only in Lovia. It is spoken by parts of the traditional population of Hurbanova and the southeast of the country, and originated in a mix of immigrant languages, mainly Slovak and Polish, and English. At last, there is a variety of immigrant languages in Lovia, spoken at home or in minority communities. Dutch is the most prominent, due to the Lovian Royal Family's ancestry and recent Libertan migrations.

The Bredish language is a notable regional language spoken in Clymene by approximately 4,000 people natively.

Bredish is a regional language spoken in the state of Clymene. Bredish has around 4,000 native speakers, and 8,000 in total. The vast majority of the speakers of the language live in Asian Island, particularly the northern part. There are also small minorities that speak the language natively on Truth Island, Adlibitan Island, Philosopher's Island, and American Island, as well as in Noble City.

Bredish is a Germanic language that originated from Dutch and English. It was influenced by Chinese, Gaelic, German and Swedish.

Dutch as a home language today

Certain population groups in Lovia exhibit diglossia, i.e. the use by a language community of two languages or dialects, of which one has higher prestige. The use of Dutch is almost entirely limited to family homes. Bilingual Dutch-English Lovians clearly regard the official Lovian English as the high variety, whereas Dutch dialects are the low, home-use variety.

There still are many Dutch-speaking households in the 21st century. Besides the Royal family of Lovia, which has been bilingual since King Arthur I of Lovia, many more prominent Lovian families and communities have Dutch, Belgian or Libertan roots.
